Over the course of time dance techniques inscribe themselves – layer by layer – into the body. They become a part of it, dictate its expression, drive it to perfection. Technique burns itself into the body, turns it into a machine: a cyborg.

“Explicit Content” is simultaneously revolt and desire: resistance to rigid, artificial form that no virtuoso can escape, and the unbounded pleasure of diving into technique in order to leave behind the inadequacies of the body. The body relishes in squeezing itself into the pre-given form and triumphs when the dance engine rolls over it.

Sergiu Matis, born in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, began his professional career at the Tanztheater Nürnberg. He has been living in Berlin since 2008, working with Colette Sadler, Yossi Berg, Philip Bergmann, Daniel Kok, Jee-Ae Lim, and others. He dances in several choreographies of Sasha Waltz & Guests (Dialoge: Neues Museum and MAXXI, Continu, Matsukaze, and Sacre). In 2014 he completed his Master’s degree Solo / Dance / Authorship (SODA) at HZT Berlin and received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation. His choreographies (Human Nature, Landing, ThreeDoors. Search, 89. Grenzenlos, Ending-dong, doom room, Duet, Keep it real, Explicit Content) have been shown internationally in Radialsystem / Berlin, Kinitiras Studio / Athens, eXplore Dance Festival / Bucharest, European Festival of Performing Arts Timisoara / Romania, International Festival dance.movement.theatre Gheorgheni / Romania, National Dance Centre Bucharest, Hebbel am Ufer Berlin and the Antistatic Festival / Sofia. He has taught at Tanzfabrik Berlin, HZT / UdK Berlin, eXplore Dance Festival Bucharest, Carmen Education Programme of the Berlin Philharmonic and Sasha Waltz & Guests, Seoul International Dance Competition, Nihon University College of Art Tokyo, and Miyako Kato Dance Space Tokyo.
